Outdoor Lads Weekend in the Brecon Beacons

Great weekend with Outdoor Lads at a youth hostel weekend in Wales at the Brecon Beacons, staying at Llanddeusant Youth Hostel. There were 21 of us.

From Outdoor Lads Brecon Beacon

Started off our walk at 9:15 on Saturday from Llanddeusant Youth Hostel (the old Red Lion Inn) following the Beacons Way. This took us around the Cwym south of Llyn y Fan Fach, then along the ridge leading from there and down to a circuit around Llyn y Fan Fawr.

When we reached the small horseshoe shelter at the top of the hill we tried to walk 400m south to find one of the second world war aircraft that crashed into the side of the mountain. The hail came down, whipped by the wind and it was freezing! Such a stinging on my bare legs: They were pink to start with and glowing pink after 20mins of bombardment by hail.

Walked back along a similar route but at low level. Passing by the dam at low level from from Llyn y Fan Fach, and then some interesting old filter beds that are now converted into a fish farm.

Once the hail has passed we stopped for lunch, sheltered from the wind on the side of Brecon Beacon mountain, half way down the cliff face at Bwich Giedd, overlooking Lyn y Fan Fawr. It was a good stop and I managed to keep dry and change into my long trousers without getting soaked.

We made it back to the Youth Hostel by 4:30, stopping on the way back to have a close encounter with a couple of red kites, which we saw from below and above as the flew past us and into the valley below: great viewing experience.

Michael and I arranged dinner: vege and beef chilli for 21, which turned out well and enough for every to eat. We got through our Bath Ales selection box very quickly, 6 bottles between us!

Played games till bedtime. Then on Sunday morning visited Carreg Cennen Castle.
